The great mystagogical Rabbi Heschel comments: "There must be a profound reason for this fact, for man's supreme misery. The reason perhaps, perhaps, is that God in His relation to us follows not only the path of compassion, but justice, and that his compassion is concealed by His justice, as justice is concealed by compassion."
